Safety Note Paralock 3

sicherheitsmitteilung-paralock-3During the use of the Paralock 3 without the additional activation of the release blocking mechanism by means of the securing pin, it has happened that the risers have been released unintentionally. Loose hanging lines of the speed system wrapped around the release button in such a way that when the speed system was subsequently operated, the release lever was turned to the open position. The incident had no serious consequences.

If the Paralock 3 is used in conjunction with a speed system, the release blocking mechanism must be activated before take-off, in addition to the normal locking mechanism, unless precautions have been taken to prevent the release button from becoming wrapped around during flight. The release blocking mechanism on the Paralock 3 is activated by grasping the locking pin and moving it towards the release lever (see Video).

Remarks on the release blocking mechanism
During flight, it is very unlikely that the Paralock needs to be unblocked under time pressure. After a reserve deployment, the pilot is no longer in free fall and there is usually no acute time pressure to separate the main wing. The release blocking mechanism can be deactivated without any pressure and subsequently the risers can be separated one by one to avoid dangerous interactions between the reserve and the glider. With the Paralock, this can be done in seconds. Previously, it took minutes to pull in the main glider and very few people manage it at all. It also takes much longer to cut the lines than it does to unblock and open the Paralock. In an urgent emergency situation, a glove may well be sacrificed.

After landing, there are situations in which the risers need to be disconnected quickly. However, these situations can usually be anticipated, giving the pilot time to deactivate the release blocking mechanism before landing.

finsterwalder-paralock-3-blue-disc"Blue Disc" makes it easier to operate the release blocking mechanism
By installing a special disc on the securing pin of the Paralock 3, the operation of the release lock is considerably simplified and the position of the Blue Disc indicates the activation of the Lock. The Blue Disc was intended for the Paralock from the start. However, after extensive testing, we decided against using the Blue Disc, as it turned out that it can lead to malfunctions in the Paralock and unintentional releases are possible. For more details see: instruction manual.

If you still want to use the Blue Disc, you can purchase it from our dealers or our webshop at the recommended retail price of €8.80/pair. However, use is strictly at your own risk and until further notice.
